2019 Summer Reading Club Report

2019 Summer Reading Club graphic

The Mayor’s Reading Club is a self-paced reading program that helps to foster reading success by encouraging participants to record the length of time they spend reading each day during the summer months. Participating in a summer reading program prevents a decline in reading ability during summer break and promotes a family-wide love of reading! With a theme of space set for the year, the Mayor's Summer Reading Club blasted off on June 1 at Birdville Reads and continued through August 3.

rocketshipDuring this time, we had a whopping 2,807 participants who read a total of 118,637 hours, wow! That's 100 more participants and 1,700 more hours compared to last year.

Over the summer, our Circulation staff was kept quite busy! We circulated 208,998 items to our patrons, with an average circulation of 247 items per hour -- more hamburgers than a McDonald's sells in an hour!

One of our favorite part of the Mayor's Summer Reading Club each year is getting to host special performances and events for the NRH community. This year, the events were as popular as ever, and we're thrilled we were able to spend time with so many of you! Some notable highlights from the summer were the edible book contest, Dinosaur George, Critterman, the Texas A&M Chemistry Show, and Harry Potter's birthday celebration. A special thank you goes out to NRH City Council and the Friends of the NRH Library for making our special Thursday programs possible and to the Perot TECH Truck for partnering with us to bring fun and educational STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) events to North Richland Hills!

What participants are saying:

“I love this program as much as my kids. It is a great program to get kids to read.”

“We enjoy it so much as a family.”

“Our family looks forward to this reading program very much!”

“Nice and encouraging for kids who don’t like to read a lot. Definitely got my siblings reading much more! I love it!”
