Reading is fun, but sometimes you need a little incentive to get started – that's where we come in! The Mayor's Summer Reading Club (MSRC) is a self-paced reading program that encourages reading throughout the summer. Research shows that two months of reading and math skills are lost over a single summer, but reading just six books during the summer may keep a student from falling behind in the next school year.
Participating in the Mayor's Summer Reading Club is FREE, and all ages are invited to join in the fun! Keep track of how much you've read using the Beanstack app or online tracker, and earn virtual badges! It's a great way to encourage yourself or start a friendly competition with your family and friends. Plus, there are a ton of fun performances and hands-on activities for all ages planned this summer. We hope to see you at the Library soon!
How it Works
1. Register
The Mayor's Summer Reading Club (MSRC) begins on May 30, but you can sign up early, starting May 15 at 10:00 a.m. Registration is quick and easy! If you've participated in MSRC in the past, you will log in to your account and register for this year's MSRC challenge for yourself and any readers in your family. If you're new to MSRC, you will need to create a Beanstack account through the app or your web browser for yourself and add any additional family members as readers. This makes it easy to keep track of all of your family's reading time on one account. Daycares who need assistance signing up can give us a call at 817-427-6818.
2. Read!
We believe reading activities of any kind should be celebrated. That means magazines, books, comics, audiobooks, and attending story time -- it all counts! The important thing is to have fun while doing it.
3. Track & Log
Keep track of how many minutes you spend reading between May 30 and August 5, and log them in the Beanstack app or online tracker. If you need help getting started, watch one of our how-to videos to guide you through each of these systems.
4. Participate in Activities
Completing different themed activities in Beanstack will award you tickets for our grand prize drawing. For example, attending events, using The Maker Spot, and exploring different reading topics are all activities you can complete in Beanstack.
5. Earn Badges & Rewards
You'll earn virtual badges as you progress through the Mayor's Summer Reading Club. Badges are like digital stickers for your Beanstack account that you get when reaching certain reading milestones and completing activities. Some badges even award you prizes and virtual tickets for the grand prize drawings, which you can learn more about below.
Prizes & Grand Prize Drawings
As you earn badges throughout the Mayor's Summer Reading Club, you will be rewarded with different goodies to pick up from the Library and virtual tickets for our grand prize drawings! Rewards include day passes to NRH₂O for children and teens who read 50 hours*, certificates and coupons to local businesses, tote bags for adults, and much more! Adults have their own set of rewards and grand prizes, so be sure to stop by the Library if you see that you've earned something.
When you complete certain activities in Beanstack, you will earn virtual tickets for our various grand prize drawings, with different sets of prizes available for children, tweens/teens, and adults. Winners of the grand prize drawings will be randomly selected after the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club ends. While not everyone will receive a grand prize, there are plenty of other incentives for you to earn along the way!
Some of this year's grand prizes include:
Apple iPad | Razor Scooter | Drawing Kit |
Nintendo Switch | LEGO Kits | Gift Cards |
Grand prizes were donated by the Friends of the NRH Library and our generous Mayor’s Summer Reading Club sponsors.
All prizes are available while supplies last and may not be sold, traded, or otherwise used by participants for financial gain.
Prizes must be collected by Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. No rewards will be available after this time.
Winners for the grand prize drawing will be randomly selected after August 5.
*NRH₂O day passes are only available to children between the ages of 3 and high school seniors for the 2023-2024 school year. Children must be present and have a valid NRH Library card to claim an NRH₂O day pass.
Special Events for Kids
In addition to our packed calendar of events for all ages, you're invited to join us each Thursday for a special event for children with guest performers at 3:00 PM
Performances will take place on the 2nd floor of the library unless otherwise noted.
